Scripps Research Institute: Creating Career & Real Estate Opportunities in Jupiter, FL

Several years ago Palm Beach County won a bid to bring Scripps Research Institute to Jupiter, Florida.  The state-of-the-art biomedical research institute is now located on the Florida Atlantic University campus in the Abacoa neighborhood of Jupiter.

As construction continues on the final project center (3 buildings totaling 350,000 square feet of space is projected for completion in early 2009), two temporary complexes have been set up on the University’s campus to serve for the interim period.

The Scripps Research Institute is a well respected and highly influential name in the biotechnology world.  The institute establishes and oversees programs designed to explore the latest concepts in medical diagnoses and treatments in order to come up with new and improving medications and cures.

Palm Beach County’s effort to bring the Scripps Research Institute to south Florida was a part of the state’s overall goal to grow the local economies (and consequently the state’s economy) by attracting important players in the research and think tank industries.

The Florida state legislature provided over $300 million in funds for economic development to secure the institute’s interest in the area, and Palm Beach County supplemented that capital with an economic package of their own to assist with construction for the Scripps laboratories and other associated costs.

Due to Scripps Research Institute’s position as one of the most highly regarded biotech names in the industry, the company attracts the interests of many biomedical scientists and other research professionals.

Opening a branch of the organization in south Florida has boosted the local economy by creating a boom in the local job market (the company created new jobs in order to begin it’s inaugural work at the new facilities).

The project also helped the local real estate market by attracting educated professionals from around the country to relocate to Palm Beach County to secure a job with Scripps.

In addition to attracting professionals on its own, Scripps is also acting as a magnet for companies in related industries such as pharmaceutical corporations and other biotechnology companies that will, in turn, attract more professionals to south Florida.

The state of Florida is not the only entity seeking to attract more research organizations with the arrival of Scripps.  Scripps Research Institute itself takes great stock in working with other researchers and organizations, and sharing ideas to promote faster and more comprehensive results.

In fact, Scripps doesn’t just encourage cooperation, the company goes the extra mile by holding Collaborative Seminars once a month.  The objective of these seminars is to identify exceptional local researchers, and allow them the opportunity to present their research and subsequent findings to the Scripps organization.

Scripps Florida is currently divided into three academic departments, each focused on a specific modern medical issue.  These departments include Molecular Therapeutics, Infectology, and Cancer Biology.  Scripps also maintains the Translational Research Institute, which oversees the areas of Drug Discovery and Advanced Technologies.

Leading scientists and researchers comprise the Scripps faculty, some crossing over and working in both the academic and Translational Research departments.
