Named for the local Native American tribe (the Jove tribe), Hobe Sound was stumbled upon by Jonathan Dickinson after he was shipwrecked on a trip from Jamaica to Philadelphia. He and most of the rest of the shipwrecked passengers bravely decided to stay in south Florida, and make a go at developing a city system similar to what they had become accustomed to in the northern parts of the country.
Hobe Sound's small-town feel doesn't preclude it from having a bit of modern sophistication. The annual Juried Arts Show draws over 30,000 people each year to survey the vast display of fine art over the course of two days. Across the Intracoastal is the esteemed Jupiter Island. Home to mega-estates built on acres of land, the Island is to Hobe Sound what Palm Beach is to West Palm Beach. The star-studded island appeals to many celebrities who want to enjoy the tropical beauty of south Florida without giving up their privacy and anonymity.
If you love the Florida wilderness, a home in Hobe Sound could answer all your wishes. Hobe Sound has placed a high value on keeping much of the surrounding lands and natural habitats undisturbed, even while housing and business development continues. The Hobe Sound Wildlife Refuge is just one example of the town's respect for Florida's natural habitats. The refuge covers over one thousand acres of preserve land surrounding the Indian River Lagoon. Most of this acreage is located on Jupiter Island, and is notorious for having some of the best sea turtle nesting territory in the nation. Across the lagoon, the smaller portion of the refuge protects sand pine scrub.
Not surprisingly in a coastal town, surfing is one of the favorite past times of Hobe Sound locals. An outside reef and the narrow current near the shoreline create sand deposits that, in turn, create sandbars that influence the surf on the way to the shore. If the waves are good, look for a lone lifeguard chair on the beach. The surfers tend to congregate there, then spread out down the beach as the day wears on.
