Named for the local Native American tribe (the Jove tribe), Hobe Sound was stumbled upon by Jonathan Dickinson after he was shipwrecked on a trip from Jamaica to Philadelphia. Hobe Sound has placed a high value on keeping much of the surrounding lands and natural habitats undisturbed, even while housing and business development continues. The Hobe Sound Wildlife Refuge is just one example of the town's respect for Florida's natural habitats. The refuge covers over one thousand acres of preserve land surrounding the Indian River Lagoon. Most of this acreage is located on Jupiter Island, and is notorious for having some of the best sea turtle nesting territory in the nation. Across the lagoon, the smaller portion of the refuge protects sand pine scrub.
Not surprisingly in a coastal town, surfing is one of the favorite past times of Hobe Sound locals. An outside reef and the narrow current near the shoreline create sand deposits that, in turn, create sandbars that influence the surf on the way to the shore. If the waves are good, look for a lone lifeguard chair on the beach. The surfers tend to congregate there, then spread out down the beach as the day wears on.
