In the mid-1950s developer and land speculator Charles Martyn came across the area of south Florida, named after the local Tequesta tribe, now known as The Village of Tequesta. Legend has it that after being told that the area was "just a jungle", Martyn decided to take this comment as a sort of challenge and began the task of developing the area into one of the most beautiful localities in Palm Beach County. Today, The Village of Tequesta is an upscale town on the Palm Beach County / Martin County line, just north of the very popular Jupiter, Florida.

The area is also home to The Lighthouse Gallery and School of Art , and The South Florida Youth Ballet, making The Village of Tequesta unique as both as desireable residential community as well as a local cultural center.
